Why This Site Exists
I grew up in a traditional Middle Eastern home where every meal was made from scratch, fresh vegetables from the market, slow-cooked stews, fresh-baked bread, herbs straight from the garden. Fast food didn't exist in my world. Junk food was a foreign concept. Food was an act of care, not convenience.
When I moved to the United States, the contrast was startling. I saw entire communities living on packaged meals, drive-through dinners, and ingredients I couldn't pronounce. I saw friends, neighbors, and coworkers, bright, kind, capable people, struggling with weight, fatigue, digestion, mood, and chronic conditions they'd been told were just "part of getting older." But I'd grown up around people in their seventies and eighties who walked daily, slept well, and rarely needed a pharmacy. I knew it didn't have to be this way.
"Most chronic conditions of our time are built one meal at a time, and they can be unbuilt the same way."
Determined to do something about it, I enrolled at Bauman College in Berkeley, California, one of the few dedicated holistic Nutrition Education institutes in the United States at the time, and earned dual certifications as a Nutrition Educator and a Natural Chef in 2010. My initial goal was simple: help my own circle of friends and family eat in a way that protects them, not depletes them.
Around that same period I also dove deep into Macrobiotics, five years of disciplined study and practice that showed me how much a whole-food, seasonal way of eating can support people living with cancer, chronic disease, and degenerative conditions alongside their medical care. My primary mentor was Kaare Bursell, a respected California-based Macrobiotic teacher whose lineage traces directly back to George Ohsawa, the founder of modern Macrobiotics, and Michio Kushi, the teacher who brought Macrobiotic philosophy to the United States. Beyond Kaare's one-on-one mentorship, I continued my education through SHI Macrobiotics, the Global Macrobiotics School, the International Macrobiotic School, and ongoing Macrobiotic conferences and community gatherings.
But the problem kept growing. The conditions I was seeing in my circle were now showing up in headlines, statistics, and emergency rooms around the world. One-on-one education wasn't enough.
Root & Restore is my response. A place where anyone, anywhere, can find evidence-based holistic Nutrition Education for the most common, and most preventable, chronic conditions of our time. It draws on over two decades of personal study, hands-on experience helping real people change how they eat, and the work of the most rigorous researchers in functional and integrative medicine.
